...this month's gear talk | The BOSS DR-110 Drum Machine...

Originally came out in 1980's by Roland, This was my 2nd drum machine after the Sound Master SR-88 was handed back after it's loan period came to an end. I used to loan this DR-110 from a college friend (Luke) and hand to hand that one back too until I could get my own. The electronic era was still in full swing and if you couldn't afford the big ass industry standard Roland TR range then unfortunately like me a slim pocket student you had to go for the 5th best I guess.

I quickly mastered programming this box and was cutting scratching to these tinny dry drum sounds highly influenced by the Knights of the Turn-table etc, as L.A. were the Kings of the 808 sound back then. After Bambaataa & Arthur Baker stunned the world with Planet Rock, L.A. took this sound serious and pioneered that electro sound. Originally it was not Midi compatible, but that didn't really matter because only the rich kids could afford Cubase or sequencing programs back then. This was a great machine for what it did at the time. The only problem I found was that of equalisation. You had a very slim choice, Bass or treble, nothing in-between, even when put through a good desk.

A classic Roland/Boss drum box, good at the time but soon had to go due to the change in drums sounds which I shall discuss in my next gear talk.
